In February 2022, municipalities throughout the Toronto GTA amended their Official Plan and Zoning By-laws to allow Garden Suites in most residential zones. 

A Garden Suite is a type of detached secondary dwelling unit located in the backyard of a primary residence. It is a self-contained living space that is separate from the main house and not situated on a public laneway. 

Key Features of Garden Suites:

  • Detached and Self-Contained: Typically built in the rear yard, garden suites are independent units with their own kitchen, bathroom, and living space.

  • Residential Use: They can be used to house family members, generate rental income, or serve as home offices or studios
